FAA Submission Options

In general there are two pathways to submit necessary documentation to the FAA.  The options are 1) Self-Service, or 2) AME-Assisted (Case Management).

SELF-SERVICE
Description: You send in the (requested) information/records and in 6-8 weeks (typically), the FAA will send you a reply.  If you have already completed your medical exam and you have submitted everything the FAA requires to assess your case, their reply should include your medical certificate and/or special issuance.  Often times, however, the FAA will instead send you a letter with very specific directions on additional items you need to submit.  After obtaining and submitting those additional items you wait again for their reply.

PRO’s: Least expensive (your time and mailing costs).  Single AME visit.

CON’s: Takes the longest time (probably*); often at least 3-4 months.  Increased likelihood of your providing insufficient or excessive documentation to the FAA resulting in delays or the need for additional reviews.

AME-ASSISTED
Description: Schedule yourself for an “AME Administrative & Consultation” with me.  At that visit we’ll review your circumstance, sort through any medical records or documents you may have brought, and advise you on what I believe the FAA will require.  Once you have all of these items, you will schedule yourself for your medical exam and bring the items with you.  After your exam we’ll compose a customized Aeromedical Disposition for you and submit this, the appropriate records, and your exam results to the FAA.  In the event they receive everything they need from my submission (likely), then in 6-8 weeks* they should send you your certificate and, if necessary, a special issuance.

PRO’s: Takes the least amount of time* (likely 6-8 weeks).  Higher likelihood of optimal certification (advice and suggestions by your AME on how to optimize your medical circumstance to minimize certification issues).

CON’s: More expensive; Administrative Fee (start at $950**) + Medical Exam Fee

* We can make no guarantees on behalf of the FAA, particularly with regard to when they might respond or what information they may request.  There is always the chance that they will ask for additional information which will prolong the process.  These are best estimates based on past experience with the FAA.

**After review of your situation during your AME Consultation appointment, the total administrative fee required to process your case will be provided.  You may pay that fee in total and your AME will process your case on your behalf.  Alternatively, you may elect to pay only the consultation fee, in which case you will be provided the guidance necessary to proceed on your own.

We provide you a receipt for your reimbursable expenses (medical insurance, employer-reimbursed, etc.).
